NMDHA Welcomes Kelly Mandella, PIMA’s new Dental Hygiene Program Director in ABQ!
If you go back a ways, you’ll find that Kelly was in the legal field for 14 years prior to becoming a hygienist. Immediately before coming to Albuquerque, she spent six years as a Clinical Coordinator in Seattle, WA, where some described her a a “real go-getter, high-energy achiever”. It seems as though Kelly has brought those same qualities to her position at PIMA as she carries on the tradition of excellence established by Missy Plese, Kelly’s predecessor.
Kelly is licensed in both WA and NM, possessing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from Eastern Washington University and a Masters of Science Degree in Learning Technology and Design with a focus on Technology in Schools from the University of Missouri. She has experience in private practice settings, including a periodontal office and a community health center.
Kelly has a passion for teaching and connecting students to volunteer opportunities whether, in the dental field or other interprofessional settings such as nursing, pharmacology, or veterinary medicine. Washington State Dental Hygiene Association recognized this passion by awarding Kelly with The Educator Of The Year award in 2019!
Kelly’s dad was a Navy pilot, moving frequently, so adapting to new situations and areas is in her blood. Of course, the good weather in the Land of Enchantment goes a long way in helping one to quickly feel right at home. PIMA’s faculty did the rest with their warm greetings and feelings of camaraderie.
In her “spare” time, Kelly serves as a hygiene examiner, a CODA site visitor and volunteer test constructor.
She has been married for thirty years, has two grown sons and two dogs.

Alison Logee, a Canadian dental hygienist and owner of Dental Hygiene Wellness Center in St-Eugène has combined a love of nature and her work as a dental hygienist into a children’s book, written to both entertain children and teach them proper oral hygiene.
Alison has written 2 children’s picture books (3-7 yrs.) and plans on creating a full series called The Chelsea Squirrel Series.
Her first book, The Treetop Tooth Shop, is currently being sold on Alison’s website alisonlogee.com for about $15.00 US dollars. E-book also available. See website for details.
Alison says that The Treetop Tooth Shop is a fun adventure story that inspires children to pick up their toothbrush at an early age and to create a positive relationship with their dental hygienist.
The book tells the story about Mousey, who is restless because his mouth hurts him. He finally makes his way to The Treetop Tooth Shop where Miss Chelsea, the dental hygienist, teaches him the importance of taking good care of his teeth.
The story is written in rhyme and is based on true-to-life characters. You can read about these characters in Alison’s very touching story found on her website alisonlogee.com. Here, Alison describes how a tiny squirrel and a mouse that she cared for inspired 2 of the characters in the book.
Her 2nd book in the series is called Chelsea’s Flossome Friend & will be launched for Oral Health month in Canada (April 2022).
